All we can do is to take on as much as possible in order to transform in a positive way the lives of children and young people at risk. We know that we have rescued many streetkids and prevented other children from taking to the streets and this gives us the strength to carry on with our work despite the limitations and challenges that occur every day.

CARF Brazil, was established by Gregory J. Smith in São Paulo in 1993. Gregory had already established The Children At Risk Foundation – CARF Norway in 1992, to benefit the street children of Brazil by defending their rights and offering them a dignified solution so that they could live and grow within a family-oriented context and healthy social environment. The knowledge gained during the last decade guided Gregory to create a Street Migration Prevention Programme. Due to its success, CARF had to seek new solutions to cope with growing demands and in 2001 The Hummingbird Arts & Cultural Activity Centre became a reality, allowing CARF to expand its capacity from 80 children and young people to more than 2000 today. An important development in 2007 was the establishing of a new Brazilian NGO, The Hummingbird Cultural Network (RCBF - Rede Cultural Beija-Flor), to cater for a network of community prevention centres implemented during the next few years and led by youth entrepreneurs trained at Hummingbird. By the end of 2012 we will have four community prevention centres up and running...

Basic Scholarships – USD$40.00 - $50.00 per month | |

| Aimed at impoverished younger children participating in our Street Migration Prevention Programme, normally aged between 11 and 14 years of age. This scholarship guarantees their active participation at the Hummingbird Activity Center alongside their essential attendance in public schools. The scholarship helps combat child labor in high-risk families by preventing these children becoming new victims. The scholarship is awarded to those in particularly difficult life situations where survival often becomes a more important factor than the child’s educational needs and mental and physical health. As a regular sponsor you will have the opportunity to stay in contact with your scholarship holder and to follow the changes your sponsorship will be making in this child's life. | |
Intermediate Scholarships - USD$60.00 - $70.00 per month | |
| This youth scholarship is aimed at developing vocational interests in young people as they grow with our programme, guaranteeing their commitment and eventually leading them on towards an advanced scholarship. A firmer step towards their personal life project. As a regular sponsor you will have the opportunity to stay in contact with your scholarship holder and to follow the changes your sponsorship will be making in this young person's life. | |
Advanced Scholarship - USD$80.00 - $100.00 per month | |
| Aimed to inspire older youth reach their potential in whatever area they are developing natural or acquired abilities in programmes at the Hummingbird Activity Centre. The scholarship can be used to cover costs for supplementary, external educational courses or for extra training sessions and materials. Such funds would otherwise be an impossible priority for them to obtain within an impoverished family situation. As a regular sponsor you will have the opportunity to stay in contact with your scholarship holder and to follow the changes your sponsorship will be making in this young person's life. | |

The Labour Ministry’s notification now bans employing children below 14 years, under the Child Labour Prohibition and Regulation Act. It bars some specific forms of harmful child labour. However, all again the same question remains as, how the government will ensure effective implementation of the Notice? A ban without a plan will backfire; merely enacting law is not enough, the government should work to wipe the root causes as well.
This act aims at getting children out of the workplace and into the schools but as you know, it is always easier said, than done! Labour not only harms a child’s development physically, psychologically, socially and developmentally but also takes away their childhood and education. It is a social scourge, which must be nipped in the bud; denying children, the right to education deprives them and the country off a bright future!
This Child labour is a serious problem; everyone must understand and try to curb this with effective campaigns driven by labour management and government entities. We all must come united and call the government requesting them to take all the necessary steps to stop the child labour and plea for a global focus on this. If each person participates – elimination of child labour will be a reality soon. So let us get together, stop the small little hands from working, and turn this dream true. What do you think?
